What is SprinklePixel?
SprinklePixel is a website dedicated to creating aesthetically pleasing graphic elements for your design needs. On SprinklePixel, I create and post handmade graphics (vectors), fonts, planners and more. In addition, I also share resources to free fonts and other free graphic elements.
Everything found on SprinklePixel can be used in design software such as Canva, iPad app, GoodNotes and AdobeSuite software, such as Illustrator and InDesign.
Where did the artwork come from?
All of the artwork found on SprinklePixel was created by me. It was created using Procreate and AdobeIllustrator.
A lot of the artwork I create is transparent or a vector so it can be easily added into your design programs. I will often refer to these illustrations as graphics, vectors*, art, etc. It’s all the same- it’s me creating cool art for you for free!
*What is a vector?
Sometimes I will refer to the illustrations on SprinklePixel as “vectors”.
A vector is an image usually created in AdobeIllustrator or CorelDraw. The reason why vectors are cool is because they’re scalable meaning you can stretch it as big or as small as you like without it losing quality. This is important when designing because we want every element to look extra crisp. Vectors are also easily editable.
Vectors are often transparent (no background) which makes them great for adding a little extra sprinkle into your designs without having to worry about that ugly white box behind it.
When you download vectors, you will often find their file names ending in .pdf, .ai, .svg. You can also find vectors with file names ending in .png and .tiff though they are pixel-based and eventually will lose if stretched too far.
What is a font? What is the difference between licensed for personal use and professional?
A font or typeface is the style of the text you see on screen. Switching up your fonts adds fun elements into your designs. However, a lot of them are not cheap. On SprinklePixel, I’ve curated an archive of amazing free fonts to download, both for personal and professional use.
Though it’s great having access to all of these free fonts, please read the font instructions when downloading, as some say it is only for personal use. Personal use means you can use it for your own personal designs, i.e. party invitations, personal documents, GoodNotes, etc. You are not allowed to use these fonts in anything that can be used to profit off of. Meaning, you can’t download a personal use font, create something with it and go and sell it now on Etsy. In those cases, you will require a professional or business use license for the font- often which are offered by the creator.
How do I import fonts into my computer?
On MAC:
Double-click the .zip file for it to automatically unpack it. Once you have access to the .ttf or .otf file- you can open it which will automatically import it into the Font Book application.
On PC:
Right click the .zip file to EXTRACT the files. If your computer does not do this, you may need an extractor such as WinRar or 7-Zip to extract the files. Once the .ttf or .otf file is available, you can right click the file and hit INSTALL which will install it onto your computer. Alternatively, you can drag the files into the “Fonts” window by going into Control Panel > Appearance and Personalization > Fonts.
Some PCs may require you to restart the computer for the font to properly be installed into the computer.
Why does my font look weird or wonky when I make it a certain size?
Lots of things happen with free fonts from the internet. Sometimes the way the font was created was created at a different size or on a different operating system than yours. A lot of the time free fonts will have a specific capacity in font size (maybe anything bigger than 80pt) because if you are requiring a font size that large, it would likely be used for a large piece of work which suggests needing a Professional or Business version of the font. When in doubt, if you’re struggling with a font, purchasing the professional version will elevate any design issues you may come across.
